Code of Conduct

Being a member of our school’s teams is both an honor as well as a responsibility. It is with this in mind that these rules are enacted.

 

Practice/ Play

  • Unexcused absences from practice will result in the inability to play/practice the following day.
  • Three unexcused absences during a single season will result in expulsion from the team.
  • Athletes will not be allowed to practice or play on the day they serve a detention or suspension
  • Athletes that miss a game or practice due to suspensions or detentions will not be permitted to play or practice the following day.
  • Athletes must enter the school/ gym at the designated practice time.
  • Entrance and exit will be through door #14 only. There will be no entrance or exit through side gym doors, These doors are emergency exits only. Athletes will also not be permitted to walk to the front of school to exit the building.

Conduct Attitude

  • Appropriate behavior is expected on buses. Students must be seated at all times. While on the bus, students are not allowed to eat food of any sort according to board policy.
  • No unsportsmanlike conduct is to be directed towards officials or opposing teams.
  • Athletes who exhibit unacceptable behavior will be issued a consequence immediately following the incident, which will be set forth first by the coach, then Athletic Director and Administration

 

Academic Eligibility for Middle School Athletes

Progress Reports

 

If the athlete is failing 1 subject:

  • Athlete is put on 1-week probation:

    Athlete can practice, but cannot play in a game(s) for probationary week.

    Athlete must check in on Friday of probationary week with teacher, coach & Athletic Director for academic progress.

    If no academic improvement athlete remains on probation until progress is shown.

    If Athlete demonstrates signs of academic improvement, can resume to normal schedule

 
If the athlete is failing 2 subjects:
  • Athlete is put on automatic 2-week probation:

    Athlete must check in on Friday of probationary week with teacher, coach & Athletic Director for academic progress.

    Athlete cannot practice, or cannot play in a game(s) for probationary weeks.

    If no academic improvement athlete repeats 2-week probation cycle until progress is shown.

    If Athlete demonstrates signs of academic improvement, after 2 week probationary period, he/ she can resume to normal schedule

 

 

Academic Eligibility for Middle School Athletes

Report Cards

 

If the athlete fails 1 subject:

  • Athlete is put on immediate probation until progress is shown:

    Athlete can practice, but cannot play in  game(s) for probationary week(s).

    Athlete must check in weekly on Fridays with teacher, coach & Athletic Director for academic progress.

    If no academic improvement athlete remains on probation until progress is shown.

    If Athlete demonstrates signs of academic improvement, can resume to normal schedule

 
If the athlete is failing 2 subjects:
  • Athlete is automatically dismissed from current team.

    Athlete is deemed academically ineligible to try out for following season.

 

 

** Athletes cannot serve 2 or more consecutive probations.

** Coaches are responsible for checking academic status of student athlete.

** Coaches are responsible for informing Athletic Director of athlete’s status.

** The ultimate decision is that of the Administration & Athletic Director.

 Any office referral must be followed by administrative consent to play

 

Attendance

  • If athlete is absent from school on the day of a practice or a game, the athlete is ineligible to participate that day.
  • Athletes must be in school for 4 hours on a school day to be given full credit for the day. If not athlete is considered absent and cannot participate in that day’s practice or game.

 

Uniforms/ Equipment

  • If an athlete loses a part, or all of school issued uniform/ equipment, he or she will be held responsible to pay for what is lost, before a new uniform is issued. (See attached price guide).
  • Student/Athletes mush wash and care for their uniform after each game/contest, and at the end of the season. Athletes should return uniforms to coach in a zip-lock bag with their name on it. (Please launder colored uniforms separately from light. Turn uniforms inside/out  before washing. Wash all uniforms in COLD water. NEVER place uniforms or warm-ups in the dryer except on low heat).

 

Tryouts

  • If an athlete tries out for a team and does not make it, he or she has one week to decide if they want to try out for another team.

 

Volunteer Coaches

  • Coaches who are not employed by the Union Beach Board of Education are not permitted to coach our athletes.
  • Any school employee who would like to serve as a volunteer coach must be interviewed by the athletic director and administration, and approved by the Union Beach Board of Education. Any non-school volunteer must interview with the athletic director and administration, fill out a Release Wavier of Liability & Indemnity Agreement, and be approved by the Union Beach Board of Education.
  • Volunteer coaches can be at practices and games, but only under the supervision of the head coach.
  • Volunteer coaches are never to be left alone with athletes.

 

Physicals

Physicals must be completed before any student/ athlete is allowed to try-out for any athletic team. According to N.J.A. C. 6A: 16-2.2, all physical examinations must be done in the medical home (a health care provider and that provider’s practice site chosen by the student’s parent or guardian for the provision of health care) of the student. All physicals must be completed on the proper school forms (obtained from the coach, nurse or athletic website) and within the required time for participation. Students and parents must also complete a health history form and a permission slip for each sport. One physical is good for the entire year, and a multi-sport athlete needs only to complete a new permission slip and health history form prior to their next sport’s season. Make sure coaches are aware of any medical problems you may have (ex: asthma, etc.)

 

Chiropractors cannot perform sports’ physicals.

  •  All head coaches are responsible for distributing the proper paperwork to athletes at their pre-season meetings, and are responsible for the proper collection of all materials well in advance of your season.
  • Any athlete injured in a previous sport, and whom a doctor saw, must be cleared by that doctor before they can compete in their next sport.
  • Managers/ Scorekeepers must also have a physical and permission slip as well.

 Accident Reports

  • If an athlete is injured at practice or in games, an accident report (included) must be filled out within 24 hours of the injury, and submitted to the following:
  1. School Nurse (original)
  2. Athletic Director
  3. Parent
  4. Coach
  • When in doubt – fill one out! It can save you many problems in the future.

 Injuries

  • Any injured athlete should be seen by our school nurse first, upon return to school.
  • If an athlete goes to an outside doctor, he/she must be cleared by that doctor before they can participate again.
  • If athletes are not cleared to participate in physical education, then they cannot participate in athletics either.
  • Coaches should call home to check on any injured athletes.
  • Injured athletes requiring immediate transportation in an ambulance must be accompanied by the student’s parent, coach or other responsible adult. In the event that a student requires transportation to the hospital due to injury, coaches must notify athletic director, administration and the student’s parents via telephone.
  • All injured athletes must remain as an “active member” of their team (attending all practices/ games) in order to attend awards ceremony, get post season recognition, etc.

Championships

  • The Athletic Department at Memorial School will no longer be responsible for the purchasing of cham pionship jackets, clothing etc. If the winning team chooses to purchase some sort of memorabilia for winning it will be up to the individual parent to choose if they want to purchase or not.
  • The Memorial School Athletic Department will be responsible for purchasing the championship tro phies, banner updates, etc.

 Miscellaneous

  • Athletes are not allowed to enter any part of the building with any type of athletic cleat. Athletes should be prepared in bringing slides or sneakers with them and change before entering the building.
  • When athletic events are being  held at Memorial School dogs,  or any other type of animal will not be    permitted  on the athletic field (s), or playing area. Infringers will be asked to depart.
  • Only coaches, referees, and those approved by the Union Beach Board of Education are allowed in locker rooms when students-athletes are present.
